چکیده

Automotive wiring harness helps the interaction between electrical equipment such as in-vehicle controllers, sensors, actuators, and lamps. An automotive connector, on the other hand, is one of the important parts, which connects wiring harness to other harnesses or electrical devices. Automotive connector terminals are generally made of tin, gold and silver plated copper alloys. Figure 1 shows an example of a sectional drawing of the terminals in engagement status. The female terminal has a spring made of copper alloy. An electric current can flow between the male and female terminals because these terminals have a mechanical contact caused by the force of the spring. For the design of new connectors, the terminal resistance must be known before starting the trial-production of the terminals. For this reason, it is important to predict electric contact resistance influenced by terminal design factor such as contact force, contact shape, plating material and plating thickness.

Fretting corrosion of tin-plated contacts

The susceptibility of tin-plated contacts to fretting corrosion is a major limitation for its use in electrical connectors. The present paper evaluates the influence of a variety of factors, such as, fretting amplitude (track length), frequency, temperature, humidity, normal load and current load on the fretting corrosion behaviour of tin-plated contacts. This paper also addresses the developme...

Intermittency Phenomena in Electrical Connectors

Fretting is known to be a major cause of contact deterioration and failure, particularly in tin-plated contacts. During fretting the contact resistance generally increases slowly with time. Superimposed on this slow increase in contact resistance are rapid changes in contact resistance within fractions of a second, called intermittences or short duration discontinuities. Although intermittences...

Fretting corrosion of tin-plated contacts: Evaluation of surface characteristics

The surface characteristics of the contact zone of tin-plated copper alloy contacts subjected to fretting motion for 8000, 16,800 and 48,000 cycles under unlubricated conditions are presented. The nature of the contact zone, at the verge of wearing out of the tin coating as well as upon the coating is completely worn out, is assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X...

Degradation of Road Tested Automotive Connectors

The automotive environment is particularly demanding on connector performance, and is characterized by large temperature changes, high humidity and corrosive atmospheres. This paper presents an initial study of connector performance in terms of temperature profiles taken from road vehicles. The temperature profiles are then simulated using empirical relationships to allow prediction of connecto...

Development of the aesthetic orthodontic appliances using a silver plating process: the report on peel resistance

The aim of this study was to analyse the peel resistance of silver plated wires examined in an intraoral setting. In this study, a 0.016 × 0.016 inch silver plated stainless steel wire and a 0.016 × 0.016 inch Teflon-coated nickel-titanium wire were investigated. The brackets of ceramic and stainless steel were bonded to the first and second bicuspids of two subjects. We investigated peel resis...
